Lavapies, a multi ethnic neighborhood in the center of Madrid is home to one of the city’s strongest concentrations of African immigrants. They come from Senegal, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and other African countries. They are mostly men, mostly young and see in Madrid the entry to a Europe that is for them a land of opportunity. While many of them stay in Madrid, most of them dream of France, Germany, England, more inclusive societies where young men that look like them are well into third and fourth generations. The barbershop offers a refuge from the day to day struggle in Madrid. The harassment of the cops, the sometimes curious stares, the constant hustle of surviving another day. Dreams and plans are made, American hip hop permeates the environment, talk of home happens from time to time, bonds are made.
